Recently King of the Cage Canada unveiled the line-up for the promotion’s upcoming July 16th, “Brawl in the Mall 5” event, and fans heading out to the Edmonton Event Centre that night will be treated to a ten fight plus card.
One of the event’s feature attractions will see KOTC Canadian Welterweight Champion Garett Davis take on American Danny Davis in a non-title affair.
“Very excited in seeing Danny Davis fight,” said KOTC Canada matchmaker Orest Zmyndak while discussing the KOTC vet. “Known as "Dee 1" he is a well known rapper scrapper who has opened for Ice Cube and has an album out. He trains at Vadnais fighting in Las Vegas with Frank Mir and Robert Drysdale and has a 5-4-1 record with 6 of his fights going the distance.”
Garett Davis will be looking to record his 16th pro win after the Vancouver fighter submitted the veteran Gabe Rivas at KOTC Canada’s “Mile Zero” in April. After not fighting throughout all of 2009, the accomplished jiu-jitsu competitor has gone 4-1 since returning to action in 2010, with his only loss during that stretch coming to KOTC World Champion Quinn Mulhern.
“This is an important fight for Garett as a win over Danny will raise some eyebrows stateside and keep him fresh to defend his belt,” Zmyndak added. “It is difficult to find Canadian opponents for Garett. We have approached many worthy contenders, but they all decline due to his experience and recent great bouts. Garett is probably the most under rated welterweight in Canada by the media, but fighters and managers know about him and his skills.”
At middleweight, Brad Stewart and Elmer Waterhen will square off once again to determine the promotion’s Canadian middleweight champion.
“Looking forward to the title fight between Brad Stewart and Elmer Waterhen,” said Zmyndak. “Brad holds a decision win over Elmer at last year’s Rexall show and was a little worse for wear for a few weeks from absorbing many of Elmer's kicks. Since that fight Elmer has put together a winning streak including a win over a very tough Jason Gorny. This proves to be a much anticipated rematch.”
In another clash at 185lbs., Jarid Bussemakers will take on Kris Miskenack in a bout that Bussemaker’s recently told KOTC he hopes makes a “few highlight reels.” In the recent interview, Bussemakers expressed his desire to make a run at the Canadian welterweight belt, if he is indeed able to score his fifth pro win on July 16th.
“I am pleased that Jarid Bussemakers has expressed that he is taking aim at the title,” Zmyndak noted. “It is something that will happen in the fall, but first Jarid must get by Kris Miskenack who is very dangerous as (Mariusz) Zastawny will attest to when Kris put him in the hospital. This should turn out to be a real slobber knocker.”
To date thirteen bouts have been confirmed for “Brawl in the Mall 5”.
“The entire card is non-stop action from top to bottom,” Zmyndak said. “I am especially looking forward to the Nick Smith and Behrang Yousefi fight. Two great young up and comers that should wow the crowd. Also anticipating the return of Troy Sorensen after his devastating KO loss to Chad Freeman. He says he is on the comeback trail and the always tough TJ Klassen stands in his way.”
Tickets for the upcoming July 16th event are available at ClubZone.com and the Wild West Shooting Centre.
