King of the Cage Canada returned to the Edmonton Events Centre this past weekend for the promotion’s fifth “Brawl in the Mall” card, which saw Elmer Waterhen take home the promotion’s Canadian Middleweight Championship by stopping Brad Stewart.
According to KOTC matchmaker Orest Zmyndak, it was a new-and-improved Waterhen that defeated Stewart on July 16th.
“I thought Elmer took the fight to Brad with a confidence that I have never seen before from him,” said Zmyndak. “Must have learned a lot from their previous fight as I thought he controlled the fight from the beginning. Devastating kick to the head obviously dazed Brad and lead to the knockout left.”
With the win, not only did Waterhen avenge a majority decision loss to Stewart last July, the Saskatchewan fighter has now won three straight fights.
“Elmer will be a great champion, as he never backs down from a fight as has been shown by the quality of opponents he faced previously,” Zmyndak said.
Other winners at “Brawl in the Mall 5” included Behrang Yousefi, Nick Cambell, Neal Anderson, James McGrath, George Matechuk, Trent Thorne and Tory Sorensen.
“The card was actually designed to showcase some new talent and that was exhibited by a great match between George Matechuk and Shaun Ramotar,” said Zmyndak. “I believe Ramotar was the favourite going into the fight with his previous amateur and pro Muay Thai experience, but George is a relative and training partner of Nick Smith's so we knew he would have a huge heart and be all action.”
“Speaking of Nick Smith, I thought that his fight with Behrang Yousefi would be fight of the night and we weren't disappointed,” added Zmyndak. “They went toe to toe at the start and Behrang proved that he will be someone to be reckoned with in the 145 division and Nick will probably be moving to 135, so look out for him. Nice to see Troy Sorensen come back with a good win and get back in the mix of the top 155's.”
Canadian Welterweight Champion Garrett Davis did not fight American Danny Davis on July 16th as scheduled, due to a frightening road incident.
“Unfortunately we did not get to see Danny Davis and Garett Davis. Garett last Tuesday was riding his bike and was t-boned by a car and spent the night in hospital with a concussion and torn knee ligaments. He was going back for further assessment on Wednesday. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him in the KOTC steel in the fall.”
With three cards now in the books for KOTC Canada, the promotion will take a brief break, before it begins the fall schedule.
“Next up will be a show in Yellowknife, NWT on September 17th,” said Zmyndak. “We are pleased that we will be the first promotion to do a show there and will showcase many local fighters with a main event of local fighter Zach Blaber against Saskatoon's Jon Ganshorn. Other locals fighters expected to be on the card are Adam MacDonald, Pat Besarra, Danny Doig, Tang Thonpheng, Luke Huntus, Gerald Adams, Ricky Campbell and Johnny Kilabuk.”
