By KOTC Staff

It’s been over 18 months since Raphael Bergmann laid claim to the King of the Cage Canadian Heavyweight Championship, and after taking the title away from Adriano Bernardo last February, the 39 year-old vet is looking forward to defending the belt against Ryan Fortin on October 28th.

“I am very excited to get back in and have the cage door shut behind me,” said Bergmann, who worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Bernardo at KOTC Canada’s “Retaliation” card last year. “There's nothing that makes me feel more alive than that; this is as thrilling as it gets. It boggles the mind why illicit drugs exist, or golf for that matter. Sorry Uncle Lloyd (laughing).”

The Iranian born, Edmonton fighter has now recorded three straight wins since he began fighting professionally earlier this year.

“I'm happy with the win and my performance yet still feel there's so much left to be worked on,” said Yousefi, who trains out of the Pix Martial Arts in St. Albert, Alberta. “Marc held on as long as he could. I'm surprised he didn't tap when I went for the arm bar while I had the triangle on him. Hope to raise the bar next time.”

By KOTC Staff

Zach Blaber continued his winning ways this past Saturday at King of the Cage Canada’s “Chiller” card in Yellowknife, by earning a split decision victory over Canadian middleweight champ Elmer Waterhen in a 215lb catch-weight tilt. Although the win extended Blaber’s win streak to five and his overall record to 6-2, the surging fighter wasn’t overly thrilled with his latest performance.

“I did not have my best performance in there,” said Blaber. “I had trouble getting my timing and became very frustrated with myself. I think Elmer did a great job! He was unpredictable on his feet and slippery on the ground.”

By KOTC Staff

In July, King of the Cage Canadian Welterweight Champion Garett Davis was set to compete on the promotion’s “Brawl in the Mall 5” event in Edmonton, Alberta, until an extremely unfortunate turn of events forced the veteran to the sidelines.

Garett Davis Willing to Fight All Comers, Ready for July 16th

By KOTC Staff

Although Canadian Welterweight Champion Garett Davis will be in action this Saturday at King of the Cage’s upcoming, July 16th “Brawl in the Mall 5” event in Edmonton, Alberta, the veteran fighter’s belt won’t be on the line. As KOTC matchmaker Orest Zmyndak recently stated, finding Davis a Canadian opponent to challenge the fighter for his title has been tough going, and as a result, the Vancouver resident will face American Danny Davis.

“I guess it’s a bit of a compliment you know, that some of these guys don’t want to fight,” said Davis, when asked how he felt about the fact that for the second time in 2011, he will not be defending his Canadian championship. “At the same time I’m kind of ticked off with guys agreeing to fight and then pulling out...it’s really frustrating; to get a chance at a title and to not take it? It’s ridiculous.”

Troy Sorensen Looking to Get Back on Track July 16th

By KOTC Staff

In March, Troy Sorensen was one win away from becoming King of the Cage’s Canadian Lightweight Champion, but the Canadian Combat Club fighter’s title aspirations were quickly halted by Chad Freeman, who stopped the veteran shortly into round one. For some, the loss may have been a tough experience to overcome, but for Sorensen it was just part of the sport that he’s grown to love.

“Chad hit me with a right hook behind the ear and I don't remember anything after that,” said Sorensen, who was awarded a shot at the KOTC Canadian lightweight belt after tapping out Kris Kucher at the promotion’s “Retaliation” event in February, 2010. “I've seen video, so I know the fight continued after that, but really, my body was just moving on muscle memory. I can't be too disappointed, I was caught with a great punch and that was the end of the fight. That's MMA.”

It’s not for a lack of wishing, training or signing bout agreements, but approximately fifteen months have gone by now since Edmonton’s Jarid “Da Tappa” Bussemakers last fought in the cage. In fact, if you had told Bussemakers after he stopped MMA pioneer Shannon “The Cannon” last March that he would not fight again until July, 2011, the 25 year-old-fighter would have likely told you that you were out of your mind.

“Business as Usual” for Nick Heynen Despite Loss of Opponent

By KOTC Staff

Nick Heynen is scheduled to make his King of the Cage debut at the promotion’s upcoming “Hypersonic” event in Calgary, Alberta; the only problem is the undefeated lightweight is without an opponent. Although the Lloydminster fighter is understandably disappointed that his original foe Mike Hodgson had to withdraw, Heynen is continuing to train hard for the June 26th card.

“It’s business as usual,” Heynen said. “I’m not changing anything. I wasn’t really putting together too much of a game plan for this guy (Hodgson); as far as what he’s able to do I really felt as though I could beat him anywhere that I wanted to take the fight. So, like I said, I’ll continue to train, continue to prepare to fight and hopefully they find me something.”

While the card included several noteworthy results, for KOTC matchmaker Orest Zmyndak, the fact that the event went off without a hitch was just as important.

“For the first sanctioned show ever in Dawson Creek, the event ran very smoothly,” said Zmyndak about the April 29th card. “KOTC personnel is very experienced in working with commissions and all requirements were met and handled professionally from both sides. The fights were outstanding, with comments from officials brought in from Edmonton ranging from very well matched and fights made sense. When Davis steps into the cage Friday night at the Encana Centre, he will take on American Gabe Rivas, who like himself is a veteran of well over 20 professional fights.

“I’ve seen several of his fights,” said Davis when asked what he knows about his next opponent. “It looks like he likes to go out and throw big heavy bombs, big looping lefts, big looping rights. He doesn’t appear to have too much in the way of wrestling defence or jiu-jitsu defence, so I’m going to do my game, take him down and submit him. People that know me know there’s no big secrets in terms of my style.”

Shenk will make his return against Kris Miskenack at King of the Cage Canada’s April 29th “Mile Zero” event in Dawson Creek, B.C., and the 32 year-old couldn’t be happier about it.

“I’ve been plagued with injuries,” said Shenk, while discussing the fact he has not fought since April, 2009. “I’ve been slated to fight for Aggression, I’ve been scheduled to fight for KOTC twice, and I was supposed to fight for Bill Mahood’s card, the XFC. Troy Sorensen Says Dream Coming True Mar.18th

By KOTC Staff

Like all fighters, Troy Sorensen entered into mixed-martial-arts hoping that one day, hours of hard work and an unwavering dedication would culminate in competing for a championship belt. Well, after several years of training, fighting and scoring four pro victories, the Canadian Combat Club fighter will get his wish on March 18th.

“I was very excited,” said Sorensen, when asked how he felt upon finding out he would fight Chad Freeman for the vacant, King of the Cage Canadian lightweight championship. “I've always dreamed of a title shot.”

“Back in 2004, a buddy and I drove seven hours to watch a MMA fight in Lethbridge,” Sorensen added, when asked about how he got into the sport. “Half-way through the show I thought to myself "I could do better than that". As soon as we got back to Edson we started the Canadian Combat Club, and in early 2005 I started with amateur fights.”
